I recently went to a film festival where I saw a really interesting coming of age movie called 16 To Life. I went to see it because I thought the premise sounded cool; I had no idea until I was sitting in the theatre that Mandy Musgrave is in it! I enjoyed the movie a lot, and the soundtrack is great. Kate’s irreverent fantasies of sexual awakening and guilt, fueled by obsessive reading of books on bizarre subjects (currently the Chinese Cultural Revolution) drive this explosive day. Kate is turning 16 and has never been kissed! When best-friend Darby abruptly decides to lose her virginity this very day, mortified Kate pretends not to care by playing matchmaker for her other co-workers, Rene, the stoner cook (Shiloh Fernandez), and emotionally messy Louise (Theresa Russell), the stand owner. Before the clock strikes midnight, Kate will learn more about love than most 16-year-olds could imagine. And Kate will discover what a 16-year-old American girl has in common with a 16-year-old Chinese girl half a world, and a cultural revolution, away.
It turns out that this film won the Best Narrative Award at the film fest that I attended. It scored 3.74 out of a possible 4. Since it was a winning film, it will screen again at the theatre in March. If you live anywhere near Kansas City, you should make a point to see it. The director and some of the actors will be attending. I'll update the info as it gets closer.
